“Hana Hou,” one of the duet albums by Herb Ohta Jr. (left) and Keoki Kahumoku. They also collaborated on “Treasures of Aloha” and “Hawaiian From the Heart.”
Keoki Kahumoku and Herb Ohta Jr. will perform contemporary Hawaiian music with a touch of blues on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 8 and 10 p.m. at Yoshi’s Jazz Club, 1330 Fillmore St. at Eddy in San Francisco’s Fillmore Heritage Center.
Two of Hawaii’s favorite sons, Kahumoku and Ohta are carrying on their musical legacies of their fathers, slack key guitar master George Kahumoku Jr. and ukulele master Herb “Ohta-san” Ohta. The next-generation musicians honor their heritage, yet add their own flair to each performance.

Herb Ohta Jr.
Ohta is considered to be one of today’s most prolific ukulele masters. Influenced by jazz, R&B, Latin and Brazilian music, he puts his stamp on Hawaiian music by pushing the instrument’s limits of tone and technique.
He started playing at the age of 3, and teaching at the age of 11. He now shares the music of Hawaii with people around the world, performing and conducting workshops.
A seven-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee (Hawaiian equivalent to the Grammy) and two-time Hawaii Music Award winner, Ohta has seven solo albums and six duet albums in circulation, and contributions on more than 40 recordings. He is well on his way to matching his father’s legacy.
His latest release, “Ukulele Journey,” hit stores in September 2007 and features original compositions as well as arrangements of Hawaiian standards.

Keoki Kahumoku
A fifth-generation Hawaiian slack key guitar artist and the only four-time Hawaiian music Grammy Award winner, Kahumoku brings his personal love of Hawaiian music and culture to people around the world.
He just added his second solo release, “Rise and Shine,” to his catalog of recordings, which includes two Grammy-winning slack key compilation albums, one for which he and his father won an award, and three other duet projects with Herb Ohta Jr.
A farmer and pig trapper, he lives on the Big Island of Hawaii. As the founder of the Kahumoku Ohana Music and Lifestyle workshops, he is able to share his passion and give back to the island communities.
He also tours year-round across the U.S., Tahiti and Japan, sharing his renditions of Hawaiian classics as well as personal and family stories that have inspired his contributions to Hawaii’s music.
