Takei, Altman Tie the Knot at JANM
Posted inFrom left: Nichelle Nichols, Brad Altman, George Takei and Walter Koenig pose for photos following the wedding of Altman and Takei at the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, part of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, on Sept. 14. They are giving the Vulcan salute from “Star Trek,” of which Nichols, Takei and Koenig are original cast members. They played Uhura, Sulu and Chekov, respectively.
Takei, 71, and Altman, 54, have been in a committed relationship for 21 years. They have become outspoken advocates for gay rights. After the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality, the two applied for a marriage license in West Hollywood and set a wedding date at JANM, where Takei has served as chair of the Board of Trustees.
The Buddhist ceremony was presided over by Rev. William Briones of Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple. The eclectic entertainment included bagpiper Dave Champagne, who led the wedding procession; Yukiko Tanaka on koto; and Randy Guiaya of the Three Filipino Tenors, singing "Climb Every Mountain."
The 200 guests included newlyweds Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Irene Hirano, former president and CEO of JANM; Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry; and civil rights leader Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton.
