Kendo/Iaido Tournament to Be Held at USF

Th San Francisco Kendo and Iaido Dojo will host its 50th anniversary Invitational (Taikai) Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 16, at the University of San Francisco War Memorial Gymnasium, located at 2335 Golden Gate Ave.

The tournament will commence at 9 a.m. and conclude at roughly 4 p.m. Spectator admission is free.

Kendo is commonly thought of as the Japanese contribution to the world of fencing, but it is more accurately Japan’s oldest martial art, having developed from its samurai past.

Lions Defeat Giants to Win Japan Series

TOKYO (Kyodo) — Hiroshi Hirao singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and four relievers did not allow a runner over the final seven innings Nov. 9 as the Seibu Lions rallied to beat the Yomiuri Giants 3-2 in Game 7 and won their first Japan Series crown in four years.

Seibu won its 13th Japan Series title, including three by its forerunner, the Nishitetsu Lions. Yomiuri was looking for its 21st Japan Series crown and first since it swept Seibu in four games in 2002, Tatsunori Hara’s first year as manager

IJF to Introduce Ranking System

BANGKOK (Kyodo) — The International Judo Federation will introduce a ranking system at the beginning of next year and use it for the qualification of athletes for major competitions, judo officials said Oct. 20.

The IJF executive committee has decided to give points to men’s and women’s judoka in all weight classes depending on their results in international tournaments, including the Olympic Games and world championships, which are both ranked in the top tier under the new system.

Diana Sakamoto Wins LTC Championship

SANTA CLARA — It was the final round of the 36-hole Ladies’ Tee Club Championship and the two top contenders were ready for battle, as were all who were involved, as the members played Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club on Oct. 25.

Emi Tuvey held a one-shot lead over Diana Sakamoto at the start of the round. Miki Masuda was eight shots back and Jan Nakatsu was 10 shots back. They would have a lot of ground to make up and true enough, it was a two-horse race all the way.

Round 1 of LTC Championship Held at Canyon Lakes

SAN RAMON — A small field of Ladies’ Tee Club members headed out to play the first round of the 36-hole Club Championship at Canyon Lakes Golf Course on Oct. 4.

This venue is meant to test the players’ mettle, and indeed only two emerged with a clear lead and the best shot to win the much-coveted major championship. Large greens, lakes and elevated greens, made it quite a challenge for the 14 members.

Bowling: Eden Nikkei Seniors

CASTRO VALLEY — For the second consecutive week, Shoyu recorded a sweep over its opponent and gained sole possession of first place.

At Castro Village Bowl on Oct. 16, it was Bill Hom with a 597 series (181-215-201) and Akiko Ogawa with a 599 series (196-182-221) that led Shoyu’s sweep over Wasabi.

Helped by Tom Murata’s 236 game and Mits Kadoyama’s 192 game, Shoga took two games from Unagi.

Kay Murata had all 180 games and Joyce Hashimoto (135 average) shot a 174 game to contribute to Tobiko’s three wins over Uni.
