Japan to Honor Centenarians
Posted inThe government of Japan will present its annual commendation to Masao Shirachi of Salinas to celebrate his longevity, as well as to express its appreciation of his contribution to society.
The government honors centenarians who are Japanese or of Japanese descent on Respect for the Aged Day (Sept. 15) each year, with the aim of raising people’s awareness of the well-being of the elderly in our communities, both in Japan and abroad.
This year, in the San Francisco consulate’s jurisdiction, Shirachi, a former Japanese national, turned 100 years old. He was born April 20, 1908 in Salinas. Consul General Yasumasa Nagamine will visit him on Sept. 30 to present the commendation.
In addition, Hiteyo Ii, who is the oldest Japanese national living abroad, will turn 108 this year.
Currently a resident of Fowler in Fresno County, she was born on Jan. 3, 1900 in Japan.
“The Consulate General of Japan sends its congratulations and best wishes for Mr. Shirachi’s and Ms Ii’s continued prosperity,” said a spokesperson for the consulate.
