PEBBLE BEACH — The Monterey Bay Chapter of Ikebana International (I.I.) will hold a demonstration of Sogetsu School ikebana by Yoshiko “Hogetsu” Williams, on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. at Pebble Beach Community Services District, 3101 Forest Lake Rd. in Pebble Beach.

The title of her demonstration will be “Fall Inspiration.”

Williams believes that flower design gives energy and creative joy. During her childhood in Japan, she picked up a magazine and saw pictures of ikebana flower arrangements. Among the many arrangements, there was one that she liked best.

That arrangement was designed by Sofu Teshigahara, the founder of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. Many years later, Williams met Soho Sakai, a Sogetsu ikebana teacher in San Francisco, was attracted by her demonstration and became a student.

She became an ikebana intructor in 1990 and she took on Hogetsu as her official Sogetsu flower name. Now she holds the Sogetsu School’s rank of komon.

Williams taught ikebana at Portland Community College in Oregon and currently teaches at College of San Mateo and San Mateo Garden Center. She has given many demonstrations and workshops in California, Oregon and Washington state.

Presently, Williams designs for the Filoli Flower Show annually and for the Bouquets to Art at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. She is a member of the San Francisco Chapter of I.I. and of the American Institute of Flower Designers, and does floral work for weddings and special events.

Guest fee is $5. Light refreshments will be served. The gate fee will be wavied for those mentioning PBCSD. For more information, call (831) 625-6455 or (408) 377-3801 or visit the website at www.ikebanamontereybay.org.
